A surgical procedure in which an incision or stoma is
surgically created in the wall of the abdomen to allow the passage of urine from
the bladder or of intestinal contents from the bowel. An ostomy procedure may be
performed to correct an anatomic defect, relieve an obstruction, or permit
treatment of a severe infection or injury of the urinary or intestinal tract.
Each procedure is named for the anatomic location of the ostomy, such as a
colostomy, ureterostomy, cecostomy, or cystostomy.
